Days & times of day — 요일, 주말, 아침, 저녁, 매일
요일·주말·아침·저녁 can take 에 when they show time. 매일 does not take 에. 아침 and 저녁 can also mean meals.
01요일yoil
day of the week · the name of one of the seven days in a week.
The seven 월 · 화 · 수 · 목 · 금 · 토 · 일, each followed by 요일. So Monday is 월요일.
Note Use 무슨, not 몇, to ask which day of the week it is.
오늘은 무슨 요일이에요?
What day is it today? | 무슨 = what kind of
02주말jumal
weekend · Saturday and Sunday.
Note The opposite is 평일. It covers Monday to Friday.
Examples 주말에 쉬다 (to rest on the weekend) · 주말에 만나다 (to meet on the weekend)
주말에 보통 뭐 해요?
What do you usually do on the weekend? | 보통 = usually | This is a common question in casual conversation
03아침achim
morning; breakfast · a time of day or the meal eaten then.
Note The particle (the small word after the noun) shows the meaning. 아침에 일어나다 means the time of day. 아침을 먹다 means the meal.
Examples 아침에 운동하다 (to exercise in the morning) · 아침을 거르다 (to skip breakfast)
저는 아침을 꼭 먹어요.
I always eat breakfast. | 꼭 = without fail | The 을 shows that 아침 means the meal here
04저녁jeonyeok
evening; dinner · a time of day or the meal eaten then.
Note 저녁 is the time around sunset. 밤 is later than that. It works like English evening and night.
Examples 저녁에 만나다 (to meet in the evening) · 저녁을 먹다 (to have dinner)
저녁에 같이 밥 먹을까요?
Shall we have dinner together this evening? | 같이 = together
05매일maeil
every day · on each day.
Note The prefix 매- means every or each. You also see it in 매일, 매주 (every week), 매월 (every month), and 매년 (every year).
Note 매일 does not take 에. Say 매일 운동해요, not 매일에 운동해요.
Examples 매일 운동하다 (to exercise daily) · 매일 아침 (every morning)
매일 삼십 분씩 걸어요.
I walk thirty minutes a day. | -씩 marks an amount repeated each time
