Directions — 오른쪽, 왼쪽, 건너다, 정류장, 도착하다

You use these five words to ask for directions and to follow them.

01오른쪽oreunjjok

the right · the side your right hand is on.

Note The ending -쪽 means side or direction. You also see it in 왼쪽, 이쪽 (this way), and 저쪽 (that way).

Examples 오른쪽으로 가다 (to go right) · 오른쪽에 있다 (to be on the right)

저기서 오른쪽으로 가세요. Turn right over there. | 저기서 = at that spot | Directions take 으로, positions take 에

02왼쪽oenjjok

the left · the side your left hand is on. The opposite is 오른쪽.

Examples 왼쪽으로 돌다 (to turn left) · 왼쪽에 보이다 (you can see it on the left)

은행은 왼쪽에 있어요. The bank is on the left. | 은행 = bank | Use 에 for the location of something

03건너다geonneoda

to cross · to go from one side to the other.

Forms 건너요 · 건넙니다 · 건넜어요

Note The road or place you cross takes 을/를.

Examples 길을 건너다 (to cross the road) · 횡단보도를 건너다 (to cross at the crosswalk)

저 길을 건너서 쭉 가세요. Cross that road and keep going straight. | 쭉 = straight ahead | The other side is 건너편

04정류장jeongnyujang🔊 [정뉴장]

bus stop · a place where buses stop for passengers.

Pronunciation [정뉴장]. After the final consonant ㅇ, you say ㄹ as ㄴ.

Note Use 역 for train and subway stations, and 정류장 for bus stops.

Examples 정류장에서 기다리다 (to wait at the stop) · 버스 정류장 (bus stop)

버스 정류장이 어디에 있어요? Where is the bus stop? | 어디 = where | You can use this sentence when you ask for directions

05도착하다dochakada🔊 [도차카다]

to arrive · to reach the place you are going to. The opposite is 출발하다 (to depart).

Pronunciation [도차카다]. The final consonant ㄱ joins the next ㅎ and makes a ㅋ sound.

Note The place where you arrive takes 에. This is the same as with 가다.

Examples 공항에 도착하다 (to arrive at the airport) · 방금 도착하다 (to have just arrived)

방금 역에 도착했어요. I've just arrived at the station. | 방금 = just now | People often say this on the phone when they arrive to meet someone
