'부터 · 까지' - Marking the Start and the End
수업은 아홉 시부터 한 시까지예요. Class runs from nine to one. 금요일까지 숙제를 내세요. Hand in the homework by Friday. Two particles draw the start and end of a stretch of time - as a pair, or each on its own.
A time range is ~부터 ~까지 - 월요일부터 금요일까지 일해요 (= I work from Monday to Friday). Same order as English "from A to B", with each particle attached after its noun instead of standing in front.
까지 alone marks a deadline - 내일까지 끝낼게요 (= I'll finish it by tomorrow). Notice what English makes you choose here: "by" for deadlines, "until" for something continuing, "to" for range ends. Korean uses 까지 for all three. One particle, no hard choice.
The trap is places. English "from" covers both "from Monday" and "from Seoul", so 부터 looks like the choice there too. The standard pattern is 에서: 집에서 학교까지 걸어서 십 분이에요 (= it's a ten-minute walk from home to school). You'll hear 서울부터 in casual speech, and the combined form 서울에서부터 also exists - but 에서 is the form you should use yourself, especially in writing. 부터 is for time and order: 집부터 청소해요 (= we clean the house first).
| Combination | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| time부터 time까지 | time range (from ~ to) | 아홉 시부터 여섯 시까지 |
| place에서 place까지 | distance range | 여기에서 역까지 가까워요 |
| time까지 alone | deadline (= by) | 다섯 시까지 오세요 |
| time부터 alone | starting point (= from, starting) | 오늘부터 한국어를 공부해요 |
은행은 오전 아홉 시부터 문을 열어요. The bank is open from nine a.m. - a starting point standing alone.
공항에서 호텔까지 얼마나 걸려요? How long does it take from the airport to the hotel? - places pair 에서 with 까지.
이번 주 금요일까지 신청하세요. Apply by this Friday. - deadline 까지, where English switches to "by".
