September 15, 2026

Culture old & new — 문화, 예술, 공연, 전통, 인기

These words are used to talk about Korean culture. Reading passages often compare 전통 with modern culture.

01문화munhwa

culture · the way of life and shared values of a group.

Note Like the English word "culture," 문화 can describe both art and ways of life. For example, 회식 문화 means "company-dinner culture," and 야근 문화 means "overtime work culture."

Examples 문화가 다르다 (cultures differ) · 문화를 이해하다 (to understand a culture) · 문화 차이 (cultural difference)

나라마다 문화가 정말 달라요. Each country has a different culture.  |  -마다 = each, every

한 나라의 문화는 그 나라의 역사와 떼어 놓고 볼 수 없다. A country's culture cannot be seen apart from its history.  |  떼어 놓다 = to separate

02예술yesul

art · creative work that expresses ideas, feelings, or beauty. It also means the works themselves.

Note 예술 includes music, painting, dance, theater, and literature. A person who creates art is an 예술가. The ending -가 can show a profession, as in 번역가.

Examples 예술을 하다 (to make art) · 예술 작품 (a work of art) · 예술가 (an artist)

저는 예술에 관심이 많아요. I'm very interested in the arts.  |  관심 = interest

예술은 쓸모를 따지지 않는다는 점에서 기술과 다르다. Art differs from technology in that it is not judged by practical usefulness.  |  쓸모 = usefulness · 따지다 = to consider carefully

03공연gongyeon

performance · music, theater, or dance shown to an audience.

Note You watch a performance with 보다, just like a film: 공연을 보다. The place is a 공연장. It ends with the same place suffix as 시장 and 전시장.

Examples 공연을 보다 (to see a show) · 공연을 하다 (to perform) · 공연장 (a venue)

주말에 공연을 보러 가요. I am going to see a performance this weekend.  |  -(으)러 marks the purpose

공연 예술은 같은 작품이라도 매번 다르게 느껴진다. In the performing arts, the same work feels different every time.  |  매번 = every time

04전통jeontong

tradition · a custom or practice passed down over a long time.

Note The opposite word is 현대, meaning "the modern age." 전통 often comes before another noun, as in 전통문화, 전통 음식, and 전통 시장.

Examples 전통을 지키다 (to keep tradition) · 전통문화 (traditional culture) · 전통 시장 (a traditional market)

한국 전통 음식을 배우고 싶어요. I'd like to learn traditional Korean cooking.  |  -고 싶다 = to want to

전통을 지키는 일과 새로움을 받아들이는 일은 어긋나지 않는다. Preserving tradition and accepting new ideas do not conflict.  |  받아들이다 = to accept · 어긋나다 = to conflict

05인기ingi🔊 [인끼]

popularity · the state of being liked by many people.

Pronunciation [인끼]. After the final consonant (patchim) ㄴ, ㄱ is said as a strong (tense) sound ㄲ.

Note Use 인기가 있다·많다 with 이/가, and use 인기를 끌다 with 을/를. 인기를 있다 is incorrect.

Examples 인기가 많다 (to be very popular) · 인기를 끌다 (to gain popularity) · 인기 있는 가수 (a popular singer)

그 가수는 요즘 인기가 정말 많아요. That singer is very popular these days.  |  가수 = a singer
