'-기 위해서' · '-도록' - In Order To, So That

건강을 지키기 위해서 매일 걷습니다. In order to stay healthy, I walk every day. 잊지 않도록 메모하세요. Take notes so that you don't forget. English makes the same change of style: plain "to" becomes "in order to" in writing. These are the patterns that make a writing-test answer read like writing.

Key point Verb + -기 위해(서) / noun + 을/를 위해(서) = in order to ~, for ~ (formal, written). -도록 = so that ~ - it marks purpose, and also degree.

How to use it

-기 위해서 states a purpose clearly and formally - 시험에 합격하기 위해서 계획을 세웠습니다 (= I made a plan in order to pass the exam). Nouns take 을/를 위해서: 가족을 위해서 요리해요 (= I cook for my family). In writing, the 서 often drops: -기 위해.

-도록 means "so that ~". It points to the state you want to bring about: 모두가 들을 수 있도록 크게 말했어요 (= I spoke loudly so that everyone could hear). It's the natural choice for prevention: 감기에 걸리지 않도록 조심하세요 (= be careful so that you don't catch a cold).

Spoken -(으)려고 carries the same purpose meaning, but the two are used in different places - conversation says 한국어를 배우려고, an essay or presentation says 한국어를 배우기 위해. Choosing the right one for the situation is a skill the writing section gives you points for.

Adjectives cannot attach to this pattern  -기 위해서 takes verbs only - not 건강하기 위해서 but 건강을 위해서 with the noun, or 건강해지기 위해서 with -아/어지다 turning the adjective into a verb.

Examples

한국 대학에 진학하기 위해서 토픽을 준비하고 있습니다. I'm preparing for TOPIK in order to enter a Korean university. - the style of a personal statement.

아이가 다치지 않도록 가구 모서리를 감쌌어요. I padded the furniture corners so that my child wouldn't get hurt. - purpose of prevention; the one acting and the one protected can be different people.

세계 평화를 위해 함께 노력합시다. Let's work together for world peace. - noun + 를 위해; the style of a slogan.

Common mistakes

❌ 건강하기 위해서 아침마다 달리기를 합니다. → ⭕ 건강을 위해서 아침마다 달리기를 합니다. 건강하다 is an adjective, and -기 위해서 pairs only with verbs. Use the noun instead (건강을 위해서), or build a verb with -아/어지다 (건강해지기 위해서).

❌ 회의에 늦지 않기 위해 도록 일찍 나왔습니다. → ⭕ 회의에 늦지 않도록 일찍 나왔습니다. 위해 and 도록 have the same function, so they can't stack - pick one. 늦지 않기 위해 works just as well; "in order to so that" fails in English for the same reason.

💡 Study tip - Open your writing answers with this pattern. Practice one frame tonight: ~하기 위해서는 ~아/어야 합니다 (= in order to ~, one must ~). It's the formal signal that graders of writing questions 51 and 53 look for.
