'-자마자 · -는 동안 · -았/었다가' - Three Ways to Link Two Moments

집에 도착하자마자 전화가 왔어요 - the phone rang the moment I got home. 제가 요리하는 동안 동생은 상을 차렸어요 - two people, one stretch of time. 우산을 안 가져갔다가 비를 만났어요 - one act completed, then an unexpected turn. Three endings, three ways two events can share a timeline.

Key point -자마자 = as soon as ~, the instant the first action ends. -는 동안(에) = while ~ - and the two clauses may have different subjects. -았/었다가 = did ~, then a switch - a completed action followed by something unexpected or opposite.
How to use it

-자마자 is Korean's "as soon as" - but watch where the tense goes. English marks past on both verbs ("as soon as I arrived, I washed my hands"). Korean attaches -자마자 to the bare stem and lets the final verb carry the tense alone: 눕자마자 잠이 들었어요 (= the moment I lay down, I fell asleep), 수업이 끝나자마자 나갈 거예요 (= I'll leave as soon as class ends). One shape for past and future - the last verb decides.

-는 동안(에) covers overlapping spans - "while". Its special value: unlike -(으)면서, the two clauses may have different subjects - 아기가 자는 동안 엄마는 책을 읽었어요 (= while the baby slept, the mom read a book). With a noun, 동안 stands alone: 방학 동안 뭐 했어요? (= what did you do during the vacation?)

-았/었다가 builds on -다가, the mid-action switch. Adding -았/었- means the first action was carried through to the end before the switch came. What follows is typically unplanned or the reverse of the first act: 시장에 갔다가 우연히 친구를 만났어요 (= I went to the market and happened to meet a friend there), 옷을 입었다가 더워서 벗었어요 (= I put the clothes on, then took them off because it was hot). English needs two full sentences and a "then"; Korean folds the completion and the turn into one ending.

At a glance
PatternMeaningExample
-자마자as soon as ~문을 열자마자 고양이가 뛰어나왔어요
-는 동안(에)while ~ (subjects may differ)제가 없는 동안 전화 왔어요?
-았/었다가did ~, then a switch or surprise창문을 열었다가 추워서 닫았어요

Boundary check  One subject doing two things at once is -(으)면서; different subjects, or a span of time, is -는 동안. Exams test exactly this line.

Examples

아침에 일어나자마자 물부터 마셔요. The first thing I do after waking up is drink some water. - literally "as soon as I get up, I drink water first": present tense makes it a routine, not one event.

한국에 사는 동안 많은 것을 배웠어요. While I lived in Korea, I learned a lot. - the ending stays in the present form; 배웠어요 sets the past.

모자를 샀다가 마음에 안 들어서 환불했어요. I bought a hat, then got a refund because I didn't like it. - the buying was fully completed, then reversed.

Common mistakes
❌ 집에 도착했자마자 손을 씻었어요. → ⭕ 집에 도착하자마자 손을 씻었어요. English puts past tense on both halves ("as soon as I arrived..."), so learners are tempted to add -았/었- here too. But -자마자 takes the bare stem - the final verb (씻었어요) sets the tense for the whole sentence.
❌ 제가 청소하면서 동생이 요리했어요. → ⭕ 제가 청소하는 동안 동생이 요리했어요. -(으)면서 needs one subject doing both actions. Two different people sharing a stretch of time call for -는 동안.
Quick check
Fill each blank with -자마자, -는 동안, or -았/었다가 in the form the sentence needs.

1. 소식을 듣(      ) 바로 달려갔어요.
2. 제가 샤워하(      ) 택배가 왔어요.
3. 편지를 썼(      ) 부끄러워서 찢어 버렸어요.
Show answers

1. 자마자 (듣자마자 - the stem takes no tense marker)   2. 는 동안 (two different subjects: I shower, the package arrives)   3. 다가 (썼다가 - the letter was finished, then the opposite action followed)

💡 Study tip - Summarize today in three sentences. Tonight, write one for each pattern below. Use -자마자 for the first thing you did after waking. Use -는 동안 for what someone else did while you were busy. Use -았/었다가 for something you did and then undid. Connectors like these are essential for the storytelling questions in the speaking test.
