'-느니 차라리 · -는 대신(에)' - "I'd Rather" and "Instead of"

줄 서서 기다리느니 차라리 다른 식당에 가겠어요 - I'd rather go to another restaurant than stand in that line. 주말에 일하는 대신에 월요일에 쉬어요 - I work weekends; in exchange, I rest on Mondays. One pattern for choosing, one for trading.

Key point -느니 (차라리) = "I'd rather ~ than ~" when both options are unwanted - you pick the less bad one. -는 대신(에) = "instead of" or "in exchange for"; nouns take 대신(에) directly.

How to use it

-느니 attaches to verbs only, and 차라리 (= rather) plus a volition ending (-겠어요, -(으)ㄹ래요) usually follows: 그 사람에게 부탁하느니 차라리 제가 하겠어요 (= I'd rather do it myself than ask him). Notice the order flip: English leads with the option you choose; Korean leads with the option you reject. And one assumption is built in - neither option is appealing.

-는 대신에 has two uses. Substitution: 밥을 먹는 대신에 빵을 먹었어요 (= I ate bread instead of rice). Trade: 오늘 도와주는 대신에 다음엔 네가 도와줘 (= I'll help today; in exchange, you help next time).

Nouns take it directly, no ending in between: 커피 대신 차를 마셔요 (= I drink tea instead of coffee). 저 대신 회의에 가 줄 수 있어요? (= could you go to the meeting in my place?).

느니's tone  -느니 strongly puts down the first option. Use it to turn down someone's suggestion and it can hurt their feelings. It's a pattern for talking to yourself and to close friends.

Examples

만원 버스를 타느니 차라리 걸어가겠어요. I'd rather walk than take a packed rush-hour bus. - both options are bad; walking is less bad.

말로 설명하는 대신에 그림을 그려서 보여 줬어요. Instead of explaining in words, I drew a picture and showed it. - substituting one method for another.

제가 청소할게요. 대신 요리는 민수 씨가 해 주세요. I'll do the cleaning. In exchange, Minsu, please do the cooking. - 대신 can open a sentence to state the terms of a trade.

Common mistakes

❌ 버스를 기다리느니 차라리 걸어갔어요. → ⭕ 버스를 기다리느니 차라리 걸어가겠어요. -느니 states the choice you're making now, so volition (-겠어요, -(으)ㄹ래요) follows. It doesn't combine with a report of what you already did.

❌ 비싸느니 싼 것을 사세요. → ⭕ 비싼 것을 사느니 싼 것을 사겠어요. -느니 is for verbs only. To use an adjective idea, wrap it in a verb phrase first - 비싼 것을 사다 - and then attach.

💡 Study tip - State one personal standard with -느니. 대충 하느니 안 하는 게 낫다 (= better not to do it at all than to do it halfway). That single sentence tells people what you will and won't settle for. Build yours tonight and say it out loud.
