Clothes & how to wear them — 옷, 신발, 가방, 입다, 신다

English usually uses one verb, wear. Korean uses different verbs for different items and body parts.

01옷ot🔊 [옫]

clothes · what you put on your body.

Pronunciation [옫]. The final consonant ㅅ sounds like ㄷ when no vowel follows it.

Examples 옷을 입다 (to wear clothes) · 옷을 사다 (to buy clothes) · 예쁜 옷 (nice clothes)

오늘 입은 옷이 참 예뻐요. The clothes you're wearing today look great.  |  참 = really · 예쁘다 = to be pretty, to look nice  |  You can use this sentence as a compliment

02신발sinbal

shoes · what goes on your feet.

Note In Korea, people do not wear shoes inside the house.

Examples 신발을 신다 (to put shoes on) · 신발을 벗다 (to take them off) · 신발이 편하다 (the shoes are comfortable)

집에 들어갈 때는 신발을 벗어요. You take your shoes off when you go inside.  |  벗다 = to take off  |  -(으)ㄹ 때 = when

bag · what you carry your things in.

Note Use 들다 for a bag you hold in your hand. Use 메다 for a bag on your shoulder or back.

Examples 가방이 무겁다 (the bag is heavy) · 가방에 넣다 (to put in the bag)

04입다ipda🔊 [입따]

to wear · used for clothing.

Pronunciation [입따]. After the final consonant ㅂ, ㄷ is said as the strong (tense) sound ㄸ.

Note Use 입다 only for clothing. Shoes take 신다 and hats take 쓰다.

Examples 옷을 입다 (to wear clothes) · 코트를 입다 (to wear a coat)

오늘은 따뜻하게 입었어요. I dressed warmly today.  |  따뜻하다 = to be warm  |  The opposite is 벗다

05신다sinda🔊 [신따]

to wear · used for footwear and socks.

Pronunciation [신따]. After the final consonant ㄴ, ㄷ is said as the strong sound ㄸ.

Note Use 신다 only for things you put on your feet: 신발 (shoes), 양말 (socks), and 구두 (dress shoes).

Examples 신발을 신다 (to put shoes on) · 양말을 신다 (to put socks on)

양말을 신고 나가세요. Put some socks on before you go out.  |  양말 = socks · -고 = and then  |  The opposite is 벗다
