Paying & places to shop — 비싸다, 계산하다, 가게, 시장, 선물

You use these words when you shop and pay. 비싸다 is the opposite of 싸다.

01비싸다bissada

to be expensive · high in price. The opposite of 싸다.

Forms 비싸요 · 비쌉니다 · 비쌌어요

Examples 값이 비싸다 (the price is high) · 너무 비싸다 (too expensive)

이건 좀 비싼 것 같아요. This seems a little expensive. | 이건 = short form of 이것은 | -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요 makes your opinion softer

02계산하다gyesanhada

to pay · to pay the price of something. It also means to calculate.

Forms 계산해요 · 계산합니다 · 계산했어요

Examples 계산을 하다 (to pay) · 따로 계산하다 (to pay separately) · 계산대 (checkout counter)

계산은 어디에서 해요? Where do I pay? | 어디에서 = where | In a restaurant, say 계산할게요 when you are ready to pay

03가게gage

shop · a single small store.

Examples 가게에 가다 (to go to a shop) · 가게에서 사다 (to buy at a shop)

집 앞 가게에서 우유를 샀어요. I bought milk at the shop in front of my house. | 집 앞 = in front of the house · 우유 = milk | The place of the action takes 에서

04시장sijang

market · many shops gathered in one place.

Note 가게 means one shop. 시장 means a market with many sellers or shops.

Examples 시장에 가다 (to go to the market) · 전통 시장 (a traditional market)

주말에 시장에 가서 과일을 샀어요. I went to the market on the weekend and bought fruit. | -아/어서 here means and then

05선물seonmul

gift, present · something you give to say thanks, to celebrate, or to show you care.

Examples 선물을 주다 (to give a gift) · 선물을 받다 (to receive a gift) · 생일 선물 (birthday present)

친구 생일 선물을 사러 왔어요. I came to buy a birthday present for a friend. | -(으)러 shows why you go somewhere | Add 하다 and you get the verb 선물하다
