At the café — 커피, 차, 빵, 과일, 만들다

You can use these words in a café or a bakery. 차 means both tea and car. Use the context to find the right meaning.

01커피keopi

coffee · a drink made from roasted coffee beans.

Note You count drinks with 잔. It is the word you use to count cups and glasses. For iced drinks, put 아이스 in front.

Examples 커피를 마시다 (to drink coffee) · 커피 한 잔 (a cup of coffee) · 아이스커피 (iced coffee)

따뜻한 커피 한 잔 주세요. A hot coffee, please. | 따뜻하다 = to be warm | Change 커피 to another drink name to order it

02차cha

tea · a drink made from leaves or fruit.

Note Another word 차 means car, and it sounds the same. The verb usually shows which one you mean. Tea goes with 마시다. A car goes with 타다.

Examples 차를 마시다 (to drink tea) · 녹차 (green tea) · 보리차 (barley tea)

저는 커피보다 차를 좋아해요. I prefer tea to coffee. | -보다 = than | The comparison with 커피 shows that 차 means tea here

03빵ppang

bread; baked goods · food you make by baking flour mixed with water.

Note 빵 means bread. It also means many kinds of sweet baked foods.

Examples 빵을 먹다 (to eat bread) · 빵을 굽다 (to bake) · 빵집 (bakery)

아침에는 보통 빵을 먹어요. I usually have bread in the morning. | 보통 = usually | A bakery is 빵집 or 베이커리

04과일gwail

fruit · a part of a plant that you can eat. It is often sweet or juicy.

Note You count many fruits with 개. For bunches of grapes, use 송이.

Examples 과일을 먹다 (to eat fruit) · 사과 (apple) · 딸기 (strawberry) · 포도 (grapes)

시장에서 과일을 많이 샀어요. I bought a lot of fruit at the market. | 많이 = a lot

05만들다mandeuldaㄹ drop

to make · to build something from materials.

Forms 만들어요 · 만듭니다 (the ㄹ drops out) · 만들었어요

Note The material you use takes 로/으로: 밀가루로 만들다.

Examples 음식을 만들다 (to make food) · 김치를 만들다 (to make kimchi)

어머니가 김치를 만들어요. My mother makes kimchi. | 담그다 is also used for making kimchi
