Ordering food — 마시다, 주문하다, 메뉴, 식당, 배고프다

These words help you enter a restaurant, choose food, and place an order.

01마시다masida

to drink · to take liquid into your mouth and swallow it.

Forms 마셔요 · 마십니다 · 마셨어요

Note Use 먹다 for food and 마시다 for liquids.

Examples 물을 마시다 (to drink water) · 커피를 마시다 (to drink coffee)

아침마다 커피를 마셔요. I drink coffee every morning.  |  The form is 마셔요, not 마시어요

02주문하다jumunhada

to order · to ask for food or goods.

Forms 주문해요 · 주문합니다 · 주문했어요

Examples 음식을 주문하다 (to order food) · 주문을 받다 (to take an order)

여기요, 주문할게요. Excuse me, I would like to order.  |  Use 여기요 to get a server's attention  |  -(으)ㄹ게요 tells the listener what you plan to do

03메뉴menyu

menu · also the dishes themselves.

Examples 메뉴를 보다 (to look at the menu) · 메뉴를 고르다 (to choose) · 오늘의 메뉴 (today's special)

메뉴 좀 보여 주세요. Could I see the menu?  |  보여 주다 = to show  |  This is the first thing you say after you sit down

04식당sikdang🔊 [식땅]

restaurant · a place that cooks and sells food.

Pronunciation [식땅]. After the final consonant ㄱ, the ㄷ becomes a strong (tense) sound ㄸ.

Examples 식당에 가다 (to go to a restaurant) · 식당에서 먹다 (to eat there) · 맛있는 식당 (a good place to eat)

이 근처에 맛있는 식당이 있어요? Is there a good restaurant around here?  |  근처 = nearby

05배고프다baegopeudaㅡ drop

to be hungry · to feel that you need or want food. The opposite is 배부르다.

Forms 배고파요 (the ㅡ drops out) · 배고픕니다 · 배고팠어요

Note The word joins 배 (stomach) and 고프다. Write the two parts together as one word.

Examples 너무 배고프다 (to be very hungry) · 배고파 죽겠다 (I am extremely hungry — very casual)

아침을 안 먹어서 너무 배고파요. I skipped breakfast, so I'm really hungry.  |  The form is 배고파요, not 배고프어요
