The climate question — 기후, 에너지, 일회용품, 배출하다, 줄이다

You use these words to talk about climate change. 배출하다 and 줄이다 make an important pair.

01기후gihu

climate · the long-term pattern of weather in a place.

Note 날씨 is the weather at one time. 기후 is the weather pattern over many years. So 오늘 기후가 좋다 sounds wrong. Use 날씨 there. Common phrases are 기후 변화 and 기후 위기.

Examples 기후가 변하다 (the climate changes) · 기후 변화 (climate change) · 기후 위기 (the climate crisis)

이 지역은 기후가 아주 따뜻해요. This region has a very warm climate.  |  지역 = region

기후 변화는 이미 우리 일상에 영향을 미치고 있다. Climate change is already affecting our daily lives.  |  일상 = everyday life

02에너지eneoji

energy · the power that makes things move or work.

Note This word comes from English and has two common uses. It means electricity and fuel, as in 에너지 절약. It also means a person's body energy, as in 에너지가 넘치다. 신재생 에너지 means "renewable energy."

Examples 에너지를 절약하다 (to save energy) · 신재생 에너지 (renewable energy) · 에너지 소비 (energy consumption)

요즘 에너지가 좀 부족한 것 같아요. I've been a bit low on energy lately.  |  Here, 에너지 refers to personal energy

화석 연료 대신 신재생 에너지로 전환하는 흐름이 뚜렷하다. The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is clearly taking place.  |  화석 연료 = fossil fuels · 전환 = a switch

03일회용품ilhoeyongpum

single-use items · products you use one time and then throw away.

Note The word is built from three parts: 일회 (one time) + 용 (use) + 품 (item).

Examples 일회용품을 쓰다 (to use disposables) · 일회용 컵 (a disposable cup) · 일회용 봉투 (a single-use bag)

카페에서 일회용 컵을 안 줘요. Cafés do not give out disposable cups.  |  If you drink inside the café, they use a reusable cup

일회용품 사용을 규제하는 나라가 점차 늘고 있다. More and more countries are regulating single-use items.  |  규제하다 = to regulate · 점차 = gradually

04배출하다baechulhada

to emit, to discharge · to let out gas, waste, or other material.

Note 버리다 is a general everyday verb. 배출하다 is a formal verb for gases and waste. 탄소 배출 means "carbon emissions." 배출량 means "the amount of emissions."

Examples 탄소를 배출하다 (to emit carbon) · 배출량 (the amount of emissions) · 분리배출 (waste sorting)

쓰레기는 분리해서 배출해 주세요. Please sort your waste before disposing of it.  |  This instruction often appears on apartment notices

온실가스 배출량을 절반으로 줄이겠다는 목표가 제시되었다. A target to halve greenhouse-gas emissions has been proposed.  |  온실가스 = greenhouse gases · 절반 = half

05줄이다jurida

to reduce · to make an amount or a level smaller on purpose.

Note 줄다 is what happens by itself. 줄이다 is what a person does on purpose. The pair 늘다/늘리다 works the same way for growth.

Examples 소비를 줄이다 (to cut spending) · 쓰레기를 줄이다 (to cut waste) · 시간을 줄이다 (to save time)

이번 달부터 지출을 줄이려고 해요. I am going to reduce my spending starting this month.  |  The plain counterpart is 줄다

탄소 배출을 줄이려는 노력은 이제 선택이 아닌 필수이다. Reducing carbon emissions is no longer optional; it is essential.  |  필수 = a must

Quick check3 questions

Fill in each blank in Korean. Every answer appears above.

  2. 온실가스 __________량을 절반으로 줄이겠다는 목표가 제시되었다. (emissions = ______량)
  3. 탄소 배출을 __________ 노력은 이제 선택이 아닌 필수이다. (줄이다 + -(으)려는)
Show answers

1. 기후   2. 배출   3. 줄이려는

Study tip Use 줄다 when something gets smaller by itself, as in 인구가 줄다. Use 줄이다 when a person makes it smaller, as in 소비를 줄이다. 늘다/늘리다 follow the same pattern for increases.
