Develop or preserve — 자원, 개발, 파괴하다, 지속하다, 대체하다

You use these words to talk about development and about protecting the environment. They show how the two are connected.

01자원jawon

natural resources · useful materials that come from nature.

Note 자원 can also mean people. 인적 자원 means "human resources." 천연자원 means "natural resources."

Examples 자원이 부족하다 (resources run short) · 자원을 아끼다 (to conserve resources) · 천연자원 (natural resources)

한국은 자원이 많지 않아요. Korea does not have many natural resources.  |  The thing in short supply takes 이/가

한정된 자원을 어떻게 나눌지가 늘 논쟁의 중심이 된다. How to share out limited resources is always at the center of the debate.  |  한정되다 = to be limited · 논쟁 = debate

02개발gaebal

development · making land, technology, or other resources more useful or more advanced.

Note 개발 can be about land or about technology. 개발 means creating something or making it usable. 발전 means improvement or progress.

Examples 개발을 하다 (to develop) · 기술 개발 (technology development) · 개발되다 (to be developed)

이 지역에 개발이 많이 됐어요. This area has been developed a great deal.  |  지역 = area

무분별한 개발은 자연을 되돌릴 수 없게 만든다. Indiscriminate development makes it impossible to bring nature back.  |  무분별하다 = to be indiscriminate · 되돌리다 = to restore

03파괴하다pagoehada

to destroy · to damage something so badly that it loses its original form.

Note People use 망가뜨리다 for objects. They use 파괴하다 for bigger things, such as forests, ecosystems, and social order. 파괴되다 is the passive form. It shows that the action happens to the thing.

Examples 자연을 파괴하다 (to destroy nature) · 환경 파괴 (environmental destruction) · 파괴되다 (to be destroyed)

숲이 많이 파괴됐어요. A great deal of forest has been destroyed.  |  숲 = forest

한번 파괴된 생태계를 되살리는 데에는 수십 년이 걸린다. Reviving a destroyed ecosystem takes decades.  |  생태계 = ecosystem · 되살리다 = to bring back

04지속하다jisokada🔊 [지소카다]

to sustain, to continue · to keep something going for a long time.

Pronunciation [지소카다]. The final consonant (patchim) ㄱ joins the next ㅎ and becomes ㅋ.

Note 지속 가능한 means "sustainable." It is a key phrase in writing about the environment. 지속적 means "continuous" or "sustained."

Examples 노력을 지속하다 (to keep up the effort) · 지속 가능한 (sustainable) · 지속되다 (to continue)

이런 상태가 계속 지속되고 있어요. This situation has been continuing.  |  Use 지속되다 when the situation itself continues

지속 가능한 개발이란 다음 세대의 몫을 남겨 두는 개발이다. Sustainable development means development that leaves a share for the next generation.  |  몫 = share · 남기다 = to leave behind

05대체하다daechehada

to replace · to use one thing instead of another.

Note 대체하다 is the formal written word for 바꾸다. The new thing takes (으)로, as in 종이 빨대로 대체하다.

Examples -(으)로 대체하다 (to replace with ~) · 대체 에너지 (alternative energy) · 대체되다 (to be replaced)

종이 빨대로 대체했어요. They replaced them with paper straws.  |  Use (으)로 for the replacement

기계가 사람의 일을 대체하는 속도가 빨라지고 있다. Machines are replacing human labor at an increasing rate.  |  속도 = speed

Study tip 지속 가능한 means "sustainable." You use resources now, but you leave enough for future generations. For example: 지속 가능한 개발이 필요하다.
