TOPIK II Grammar · Ch.3 Reason, Cause & Purpose 01

'-느라고 · -는 바람에 · 탓에' - Three Reasons Things Went Wrong

숙제를 하느라고 못 잤어요. I was doing homework, so I couldn't sleep. 버스를 놓치는 바람에 지각했어요. I missed the bus, so I was late. English covers both with one all-purpose "because". Korean keeps a set of endings just for reasons that led to a bad result - and each one has its own personality.

Key point -느라고 = doing A took my time, so B didn't happen (same subject). -는 바람에 = a sudden event caused it. 탓에 = the blame lies there.
How to use it

-느라고 comes with two conditions: the same subject in both halves, and a first verb that takes time or energy. So what follows is what you failed to do, or a bad result - 게임하느라고 전화를 못 받았어요 (= I was gaming, so I couldn't answer the phone). Even for past events, do not add -았/었- before it; the final verb carries the tense.

-는 바람에 is for an unexpected event as the cause - 갑자기 비가 오는 바람에 다 젖었어요 (= it suddenly rained, so I got soaked). A handy image: 바람 is also the word for wind - a sudden gust blew through and knocked your plans over. The clause after it is usually past tense.

탓에 points the finger. Nouns attach directly - 날씨 탓에 (= because of the weather) - and verbs or adjectives use the modifier form: 늦게 잔 탓에 (= because I went to bed late). 탓 is a noun meaning "fault, blame", so it also stands alone: 제 탓이에요 (= it's my fault).

At a glance
PatternPersonalityExample
-느라고I was busy doing it시험공부하느라고 주말에 못 쉬었어요
-는 바람에sudden, unexpected cause넘어지는 바람에 다리를 다쳤어요
(modifier / noun) + 탓에assigning blame교통사고가 난 탓에 길이 막혀요 · 제 탓이에요

If the result is good  None of these three fits a good outcome - for that you need 덕분에 (= thanks to). The nature of the result picks the pattern.

Examples

아침을 준비하느라고 뉴스를 못 봤어요. I was making breakfast, so I missed the news. - same subject, and the breakfast is where the time went.

휴대폰이 갑자기 꺼지는 바람에 연락을 못 했어요. My phone suddenly shut off, so I couldn't get in touch. - an unexpected event as the cause.

어젯밤에 커피를 마신 탓에 잠을 설쳤어요. I slept badly because of the coffee I drank last night. - literally "by fault of the coffee I drank": past modifier -(으)ㄴ + 탓에, naming the culprit.

Common mistakes
❌ 비가 오느라고 소풍이 취소됐어요. → ⭕ 비가 오는 바람에 소풍이 취소됐어요. -느라고 needs a subject who spends time and effort on the activity - and the same subject in both halves. Rain does not spend time or effort, and the rain isn't what got canceled. A sudden outside cause is -는 바람에 territory.
❌ 열심히 운동하느라고 건강해졌어요. → ⭕ 열심히 운동해서 건강해졌어요. After -느라고, the result must be something that failed or went badly. Getting healthier is a good result, so the reason takes plain -아/어서 - or 덕분에 if you want to add gratitude.
Quick check
Fill each blank with -느라고, -는 바람에, or 탓에.

1. 느라고 (I'm the one who spent that time watching)   2. 는 바람에 (a sudden breakdown outside my control)   3. 탓에 (noun + blame: the weather is the reason for the bad result)

💡 Study tip - Build your apology sentence tonight. 차가 막히는 바람에 늦었습니다. 죄송합니다. (= The traffic was backed up, so I'm late. I'm sorry.) Reason and apology in one sentence - the grown-up way of speaking that Koreans expect when you're late or absent. Say it out loud until it comes without thinking.
